[x] Background Information:
The Past:

Rachel had what could be considered a dream life. She had a loving family, and a man who loved her. She traveled to many places with him, seeking treasures in remote locations. It all changed though one fateful day. Her lover took her to a cave, to retrieve what was to be her engagement ring. Instead, the rickety bridge began to collapse, and to save her lover's life, Rachel pushed him off of the bridge just in time. She plummeted to the cave floor below, and though she miraculously survived the fall took it's toll. Rachel lost all of her memories, and her parents blamed her lover for causing this family tragedy. With no memory of their relationship, and seeing the pain that he was causing her parents, Rachel told her former lover to leave, and he was soon chased out of Kohlingen.

She would have spent the rest of her life this way, but a year later Imperial soldiers raided her village, and she was mortally wounded. The trauma caused all her previous memories to return. With what should have been her last breath, she bid her family that if they should ever see her former lover again, please tell him she loved him. So once again her life seemed to be over, but by a twist of fate, that same lover intervened upon discovering what had happened. He had a local "quack" doctor use special herbs to put her in suspended animation, so that instead of dying, she lay unconscious and unaging, while he searched the world for a way to restore her life.

It took the end of the world for this power to become available. Manifesting in the form of the Esper "the Phoenix". But the summon was badly damaged, and though it worked, it was a temporary revival. Rachel was only given enough time to express her love and assuage his lingering guilt, before begging the phoenix to be reborn and to give it's power to her former lover. Once again, she thought she was going to breath her last breath, finally being at peace that she had been able to make amends. But then the darkness faded, and she felt the strange sensation of droplets of water hitting her face. She thought maybe someone was crying over her body, but upon opening her eyes, she saw that it was only the rain. She was sitting on the ground, her back leaned up against a tree as though she'd been sleeping there, as though she'd merely been dreaming about all that had transpired before. And like a dream, the memories of her past life quickly faded away until, as had happened during the cave incident, there was nothing left, not even her name. Now damp and confused, Rachel cast about for something to tell her where she was and how she'd come to be there. And in the distance, she saw a town...

The Present:

By her count, it's been five years since Rachel moved on to "the Afterlife". That's what she came to call it. When she first arrived in Dali on a wet day after bidding a fond and final farewell to her former lover. With no home and no memories, not even a name to go by, she was taken in by a local couple who treated her kindly and even gave her a new name "Lani". She'd had only the barest memory of her skills, gleaned only by the fact that she carried weapons and seemed in the right kind of form to use them. This caused the couple to surmise that she must be a bounty hunter, and so that's what she became.

During the three years that ensued, she took on the life of a Bounty Hunter and made quite a name for herself. She put away her sword and her pistol and acquired a large, heavy, and intimidating axe and straightened her naturally wavy hair, donning (perhaps subconsciously) clothes that were red and orange and yellow like the flames of the phoenix. Her first year was extremely difficult, and it made her hard. Finally she was hired by Queen Brahne to work with a man called Amarant hunting down the princess who had been 'kidnapped' by the world famous theatre troupe Tantalus. She felt like she was competing with the mercenary rather than working with him, which lead her to some veru questionable practices. However, being an inherently good person, she began to realize that this wasn't who she was or wanted to be anymore. Due partially to witnessing Amarant's own change of heart she finally made a change and was able to help save a village when it was under attack.

It was during the attack on the village that, in a flash, her memories came flooding back to her. She was appalled at her behavior, and recalling her previous actions she became ashamed of herself. As a symbol of her atonement, she hung up her Axe (Literally, it's mounted on the wall over her fireplace) and picked up her sword and pistol once more (though she had to repair them after so many years of disuse). She let her hair return to it's naturally wavy state and returned to wearing the clothes she had before. And most of all she decided to forgo the life of a bounty hunter, instead choosing to live the carefree life of a relic hunter so that she could honor both herself and her former lover for whom she still cared a great deal. Weapons in hand along with several other useful tools, she traversed the ancient caves and ruins of Gaia, searching for long forgotten treasures and mysterious objects. Still going by the name of Lani, an alias that she has become comfortable with over the past three years.

One day, as she was digging in an old mine, a vibrant light appeared before her and a vivid, fire colored crystal dropped into her lap. Rachel knew immediately that the phoenix had returned to her side though she did not know why. It seemed as though she was connected to it somehow. Was it because she'd given it some of her own life force to revive it's cracked magicite body? Whatever the reason, she's kept the summon close to her ever since. And after relaxing for a time, she and her eternal companion have set out with sword and pistol in tow, riding for Lindblum with her companion to seek her next adventure.

[x] Personality: Rachel is a kind and gentle person who's carefree exterior hides a painful past riddled with heartache. She listens to the woes of others, but rarely gives details about her own past. Often times she may even try to redirect the conversation back to either the person she's speaking with, or to another, more current topic. This has been a very successful tactic for her. And most people who have met her describe her as a friendly and carefree person who always helps solve peoples troubles where she can, when in reality she's quite distant perhaps even aloof.
